What I enjoy most about her is that she has well-researched fantasy stories. There are some authors that make up their own rules, but I truly enjoy the classic viewpoint. Hurog is about wizards and dragons and paranoid overbearing kings and mystical artifacts and places.
(The author has written other series: The Mercy Thompson and Alpha & Omega series are in a completely separate world that has werewolves, fae, and vampires as the mystical creatures trifecta with other miscellaneous beings/creatures/people in the world. I only hesitate to recommend it despite the stellar world portrayal is because it has unashamed Mary Sue romance.)
Hurog is good, though. Romance is almost an afterthought rather than in the forefront. The main character is wildly clever and enormously strong and in line for the western seaside pretty much castle. The stronghold is also said to have a curse.

I love finding new authors! I just re-discovered Patricia Wrede. I recently read one of her books in the Young adult section called Thirteenth Child, and it was excellent! It's part of a series, and I can't wait to read the rest of them.
